StarCraft is a science fiction military real-time strategy video game created by Blizzard Entertainment. On March 31st, 1998, the first game in the series was published for Microsoft Windows. The game sold more than 11 million copies throughout the world as of February 2009, a feat for which it is widely regarded as one of the highest-selling games designed for the personal computer. A Mac OS version of the game was published in March 1999. A Nintendo 64 adaptation of StarCraft that was co-developed along with Mass Media Interactive Entertainment was published on June 13th, 2000. The team started working on the game shortly after the release of Warcraft II in 1995. StarCraft debuted at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 1996, where the game was negatively compared to Warcraft II. Due to this, the producers of StarCraft decided to overhaul the project and then later showcase it to public early next year in 1997 when it received an overwhelmingly positive response. The storyline of StarCraft has been expanded and adapted through several novels which include the expansion pack StarCraft: Brood War as well as two authorized add-ons. The sequel to the first StarCraft game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was published in July 2010. The new expansion pack named StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, is expected to be released in 2012.

The Protoss are a humanoid race with highly advanced technology as well as psionic abilities. They aim to preserve their great civilization and uniquely philosophical lifestyle from the clutches of the attacking Zerg. There are several important characters in StarCraft who often make a recurring appearance in the games and novels. These characters play a pivotal role in the progression of the storyline as well as make the game interesting for the players.
